ABSTRACT
Introduction: the success or failure of endodontic treatment is assessed by clinical signs and symptoms and radiographic findings of the treated tooth. Objectives: to determine the behavior of endodontic failure according to age, sex, dental group, elapsed treatment time and cause of failure.
Methods: an observational, descriptive, longitudinal, prospective study was conducted during October 2011 to December 2012, on 48 of patients aged 15 years and over of both sexes who attended the emergency service. A data collection form was made, the results were presented in tabular form and statistical graphs, percentage was used as a summary measure, the statistical test was used the contingency table through the Docimo χ2. Those cases in which significant differences were reached it was applied Duncan's multiple comparison Docimo.
Results: the group of 35-59 years was the most affected, with 50 %, females predominated with 66.6 %, the incisors and premolars were the most affected with 39.6 % and 33.3 % respectively, 45.8 % of the failures occurred during the first two years and in 50% the cause was prior pulporadicular condition.
Conclusions: the group of 35 to 59 years old and female sex endodontic failure were more affected by endodontic failure, the most affected dental groups were incisors and premolars, the largest percentage of failures occurred during the first two years of treatment and the main cause was the prior pulporadicular condition.
