ABSTRACT
Introduction: the incidence of cutaneous cancer has increased in large proportions in the world. Cuba currently stands within Latin America and Third World countries with the highest incidence of non-melanoma skin cancer. Objective: to determine the incidence of cutaneous cancer in Güines and San José de las Lajas.
Methods: a longitudinal, retrospective, descriptive study was performed on the incidence of patients who underwent surgery for cutaneous cancer in Güines and San José de las Lajas hospitals, during the years 2009 to 2011. The sample consisted of 352 patients with histological diagnosis of cutaneous cancer. The variables used were age, sex, year of diagnosis, location of the lesion, histological diagnosis, and complete resection.
Results: in the year 2009, 117 cases of cutaneous cancer were diagnosed, 105 in 2010 and 130 in 2011. Basal cell carcinoma was the most frequent, with 76 % of patients affected by it, squamous-cell carcinoma occupied 21% and cutaneous melanoma was presented by 2 %. The highest percent of patients were men, with 54 %, about 46 % representing women. 59 % of the lesions were in the head, 15% in the neck, 13 % in the extremities and 12% in the thorax.
Conclusions: in 2011 it was diagnosed the largest number of patients with skin cancer, the most common were basal cell carcinoma. Ages between 50 and 69 years were the most affected. Males accounted for the majority of patients, lesions were mostly found in the face.
