ABSTRACT
Introduction: renal cancer accounts for 3 % of adult malignant neoplasies. Objective: to assess new clinical and histological features associated with the new classifications, to characterize in a clinical-pathological way, patients treated for renal cancer, according to updated criteria, to describe some variables of interest, and to estimate the overall five-year survival evolution of the different histological subtypes more frequent and its relation to the size and nuclear grade.
Method: an ambispective, descriptive research was conducted in the Department of Pathological Anatomy of "Hermanos Ameijeiras" Hospital with 112 patients treated for malignant renal tumors during the period between 2004 and 2006. The variables used were: variables: survival time, patient state, nuclear grade, and tumor size.
Results: the most frequently diagnosed histological type was clear cell carcinoma, with a total of 76 cases. The highest percentage of cases had average size between 4 and 7 cm in diameter. It was seen that most of the cases were classified into the Fuhrman nuclear grade 2.
Conclusions: clear cell carcinoma remains the worst prognosis of survival. The tumor size and nuclear grade showed significant differences regarding the survival of patients, to match the worst behavior to those of larger size or nuclear grade.
