ABSTRACT
Introduction: chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), a generally irreversible disease, characterized by the existence of an obstruction of the airways, with marked decrease in respiratory capacity and progressive deterioration of the quality of life related to health (HRLQOL) of those affected. It has been invoked the utility of implementing physical rehabilitation programs in the treatment of patients.
Objective: to study the effect of a protocol of physical exercises developed at the
Department of Rehabilitation of Center for Medical and Surgical Research in
patients with COPD.
Methods: For three months, a sample of 50 COPD patients from the Department of
Pneumology underwent a controlled and personalized program, of aerobics and
calisthenics, walk test and bike exercise. The results were evaluated through a
group of clinical and functional elements, anthropometric tests, measurements of
respiratory function, and the FS-36 questionnaire.
Results: when starting parameters of the program were compared with the ending
parameters, a significant improvement in clinical and functional elements were
demonstrated, a significant improvement of skeletal muscle measurements, as well
as in FEV1. The patients' responses to the questionnaire SF-36 showed a significant
improvement in all dimensions contained therein.
Conclusions: the exercise program implemented as part of a comprehensive rehabilitation program had a positive effect on the morphofunctional condition of
the patients, and a favorable impact on their quality of life.
