ABSTRACT
Mycobacterium Marinum is an opportunistic mycobacteria isolated in 1926 by Joseph D. Aronson. It is a slow
growing photochromgenic mycobacteria and belongs to group I according to Runyon’s classification.
Culture in Lowenstein-Jensen at 30-32
° C shows a yellow pigment. It is found in aquatic environments, salty or
fresh water, especially in stagnant water, such as in ponds, fish tanks or swimming pools. Infection is acquired
by direct inoculation. It is also known as “swimming pool granuloma” or “fish tank granuloma”. There are three
clinical forms: nodular, lymphangitic or sporotrichoid and disseminated disease. Primary lesions are bluish-red
nodules or verrucous plaques. Tenosynovitis, arthritis, bursitis and osteomyelitis, can also be present. There is
few data comparing different treatment options. Two drugs should be selected, among cotrimoxazole, minocycline,
doxicycline, clarithromycin, ciprofloxacin, rifampin and isoniazide, and three drugs if there is bone or
joint infection.
