ABSTRACT
Introduction: Infantile hepatic hemangioma (IHH), It is considered a proliferative neoplasia, has a frequency of 10% in neonates with hepatic masses. The aim of this paper is to show the experience of the use of propranolol in patients with IHH in a 3rd level center.Materials and Methods: This is a case series, in which we reviewed the clinical and radiological records of patients with HHI between 2007-2013, treated with VO Propanolol at 2.2 mg/kg/day. They were followed with ultrasound and computed tomography and electrocardiogram periodically, to evaluate their response.
Results: 7 children with IHH, 5 (71%) girls and 2 boys (29 %), mean age at diagnosis of 2.8 months were evaluated. 6 cases had palpable abdominal mass. We obtained reducing the size of lesions in 5 cases. In 2 cases, embolization was required. Treatment was administered for about a year. A single case of Kasabach - Merritt syndrome and subsequent multiple organ failure. He died 2 months after starting treatment. We have no recurrences until the date.
Discussion: Propranolol has proved useful as a treatment for patients with HHI; remain safe with few side effects.
