ABSTRACT
Melanoma is a malignancy of the pigment-producing cells (melanocytes)
located predominantly in the skin. It accounts for only
4% of all skin cancers; however, it causes the greatest number
of skin cancer–related deaths worldwide. Tumor thickness in
millimeters (Breslow level), the presence of ulceration, and positive
sentinel node detected by biopsy are the three most important
prognostic factors. The role of the dermatologist in the
early detection of primary cutaneous melanoma is the best tool
in reducing morbimortality.
