ABSTRACT
The arterial tourniquet tire is a procedure which is not physiological that allows the emptying of blood from the extremities. This maneuver provides optimal conditions within the surgical field such as have a bloodless surgical and surgical optimal condition, minimizes blood loss, facilitates the visualization and identification of vital structures and reduces surgical time. In the same way the application of tourniquet may have some physiological and biochemical significant consequences that are relevant for the anesthesiologist and intraoperative and postoperative management. This is a non-physiological element and as such it has a number of drawbacks, both locally and systemically, and whose severity is directly related to the time and pressure that remains the tourniquet inflated. The responsibility of the tourniquet, maintenance, application and possible complications fall both the surgeon and the anesthesiologist, so it is very important that both have a prior agreement on the expected surgical time, enforcement mode and the risk are discussed with the patient previously.
