ABSTRACT
Background: Neurofibroma is a benign tumor from peripheral
cells of the neural sheath. They are rare asymptomatic tumors,
more common in women, without any systemic involvement.
Objective: To obtain the epidemiological data of solitary neurofibroma
in the dermatology department at Dr Manuel Gea
González General Hospital in Mexico City.
Material and methods: A retrospective and descriptive
study was carried out from the charts of all the patients who
presented solitary neurofibroma from January 1980 to December
2010.
Results: 44 cases were included in a 30 year period; 27 women
and 17 men. Upper extremities were the most affected areas.
The most common features were soft tumors less than 1
cm in diameter, asymptomatic, and with the classic histological
features with subcutaneous spindle cells.
Conclusions: The characteristics of solitary neurofibroma
in our study were similar to those reported in the literature;
except that it was most frequent in women, and without any
malignant association.
