ABSTRACT
Since 1735, Pellagra has been known, as a medical condition
caused by niacin deficiency. Throughout history, numerous epidemics
associated to populations with a diet based mainly on
maize, have been reported. Nowadays, isolated cases are still
diagnosed.
It is described as the disease with the four D’s: dermatitis,
diarrhea, dementia and death, although if adequate treatment
is administered promptly, dementia and death can be avoided.
Treatment is based on a balanced diet and the exogenous administration
of niacin, nicotinic acid or nicotinamide.
