ABSTRACT
The present study describes for the first time the chromosome number and structure of hybrids of the cross of Bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis) and Domestic sheep (Ovis aries). The diploid number 2n = 54 of this number is formed by: three pairs of large submetacentric chromosomes and 23 pairs of acrocentric chromosomes of variable size. This array is equal in the three species. The hybrid result from this cross is fertile and it is concluded that this opens up new alternatives for the preservation and protection of Bighorn sheep in the wild; a species that is currently considered as CITES II, threatened, and under NOM-ECOL-059/94, is in a special protection program.
