ABSTRACT
Introduction: Acute bronquiolitis is a major cause of medical emergencies in children under 2 years of age in Cuba and in many parts of the world.
Objective: To determine the behavior of the patients admitted with bronquiolitis in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit.
Method: Retrospective, descriptive and case series study. Sample: 58 medical records and log books of children admitted to the PICU with a diagnosis of bronquiolitis. Time: October 1, 2011 until March 31, 2012. Processing: for data processing that are presented in tables and are expressed in numbers and percentages, SPSS 11.0 were used.
Results: the largest number of patients was males and the admission was mainly from the emergency department. Moderate bronquiolitis occurred mainly in children of smokers, 19.6% of patients had complications, 51% of children were admitted to the ICU for 24 hours, 82% of patients were evaluated with a weight / height percentile of 10-90, 74% of children with moderate bronquiolitis had another previous admission for this reason.
Conclusions: Patients received basically symptomatic treatment, oxygen and respiratory therapy.
