ABSTRACT
Introduction: The percutaneous interventional catheterization is an effective procedure that improves the clinical course of patients with few complications and reduces mortality.
Objective: To determine the effectiveness of emergent interventional cardiac catheterization in children under one year of age.
Method: We conducted a descriptive and cross sectional study in order to determine the effectiveness of emergency interventional cardiac catheterization in children less than one year, admitted in the Pediatric Cardiology Centre: William Soler, in the period from January 1, 2009 to December 31, 2010.
Results: emergency interventional catheterization was performed more frequently in male children less than one month. Pulmonary valve stenosis and transposition of great arteries were the most common diagnostic and pulmonary valvuloplasty and Rashkind septostomy the most performed techniques respectively. The most frequent complications were severe bradycardia during catheterization, and sepsis and hypoxemia in the intensive care stay.
Conclusions: Interventional catheterization was effective, improved arterial oxygen saturation and residual pressure gradients achieved were light in most patients. Prostaglandin E1 is useful to temporarily maintain the patency of the ductus arteriosus to stabilize the clinical condition before and after the procedure and contribute to the survival of these infants.
