ABSTRACT
Introduction: Heart rhythm disorders are no longer a unique theme concerning cardiologists to become a health problem involving several professionals from primary care to the last link of intensive care medicine. Medical care for patients involves specific management according to the type of arrhythmia, sometimes too complex to be solved in primary care.
Objective: To characterize patients with cardiac rhythm disorders by age, sex, risk factors, stay and final therapeutic outcome.
Method: A descriptive, cross-sectional study which included 82 patients admitted at the intensive care municipal unit in Docent Policlinic: Mario Muñoz Monroy, from January 1st 2004 to December 31st 2009 was conducted.
Results: We identified the most common rhythm disturbances, distributed according to risk factors, sex, age, length of stay and final therapeutic approach. Results: Atrial fibrillation was the most common arrhythmia. Female patients were predominant. The mean age was 60.6 ± 15.1 years. Resolution was more frequent in patients between 1 and 2 hours, only 10 patients were referred to secondary care. The prevailing risk factors were smoking, ischemic heart disease and hypertension.
Conclusions: With the foundation of intensive care municipal unit the goals to reduce significantly the number of patients referred to secondary care, improve prognosis and quality of long-term life of these patients have been achieved.
