ABSTRACT
Malignancies affecting post-burn scars comprise 2% of all skin
carcinomas. While the squamous-cell variety is the most frequent,
melanomas are extremely rare. This paper describes a
patient who suffered heat burns in both legs and, after 40 years,
developed a squamous cell carcinoma on the scarring tissue of
the left leg as well as a nodular melanoma in the right limb.
Marjolin’s ulcer is a malignancy often seen in chronically
swollen skin and post-burn scars, and is usually treated by surgical
removal. However, melanomas in post-burn scars may be
quite aggressive and should be managed according to accepted
standards and recommendations.
