ABSTRACT
Leishmaniasis is a parasitic infection caused by a protozoa belonging to the genus “Leishmania”. The disease is endemic in the tropical countries as
well in the Mediterranean basin. During the last 10 years, with the advent of human immunodeficiency virus infection (HIV), the number of cases
of visceral leishmaniasis has dramatically increased, mainly in Spain, Italy, France and Portugal, as a result of its overlapping with AIDS. Moreover,
this «co-infection “Leishmania”/HIV» has been responsible for unknown clinical manifestations of the disease and for frequent parasited cutaneous
lesions with “Leishmania” in these patients. Impaired immune system leads also to a loss of the common relationship between species and clinical
presentation.
We present a revision of the literature and some personal cases of such modifications in the clinics of cutaneous leishmaniasis related to HIV
infection.
