Influenza virus A H1N1 associated hemophagocytic syndrome

ABSTRACT

Hemophagocytic syndrome is a rare disease caused by a dysfunction of the cytotoxic cells and NK cells, causing aberrant cytokine release, resulting in the proliferation and activation of histiocytes with subsequent hemophagocytosis. Two forms are known, primary or genetic and secondary or reactive. It manifests with fever, lymphadenopathy, hepatosplenomegaly, maculopapular rash, cytopenias, hypertriglyceridemia and hyperferritinemia. It has been linked to several virus, highlighting the Epstein-Barr, cytomegalovirus, herpes 6 and 8, parvovirus B-19 and human immunodeficiency and there are few reports of related virus influenza A H1N1. Diagnosis is done by clinical data, laboratory tests, histopathology and serum biomarkers. Treatment is aimed at correcting the underlying cause, as well as steroids and immunosuppressants. The aim of this paper is to report a clinical case of hemophagocytic syndrome.
