ABSTRACT
Introduction: There is consensus that sanitary interventions must be evaluated not only in term of living time but in quality of life. Objective: To characterize the quality of life at discharge from the ICU and a year later.
Method: A prospective and cross-sectional descriptive and inferential study of patients discharged from the ICU was conducted Patients or relatives were interviewed at discharge from the ICU and the year afterward, according the Barthel and SF-36 quality of life scales.
Results: Males were predominant (61.1%). The average age was 50.1 ± 19.1 years. One year after discharge, 77.7% of patients were alive, 41.7% corresponded to a clinical condition category. Hypertension was the most common pathological personal finding (26.2%). According to Barthel Scale at discharge from the ICU, 73.8% of patients were dependent, leading the clinical condition category (43.4%). When analyzed a year later, 70% of the patients were independent and the trauma category occupied the highest incidence (41.1%). The SF 36 evaluating the physical component at the time of the hospital discharge showed that 92.2% of the patients were dependent and the clinical condition category was the most representative (42.1%). Regarding the mental component, 35.9% of the patients who needed help correspond to the clinical condition category with the higher percentage (48.6%).
Conclusions: A year later, 71.3 and 80% of the patients were found to be independent regarding physical and mental components respectively. Trauma patient’s condition was the most representative category to evaluate both components with 42.1% and 39.2% respectively.
