Osgood-Schlatter disease. Conservative therapy

ABSTRACT
Objective. The aim of this study was to describe the results of a conservative treatment in patients with Osgood-Schlatter disease.
Material and methods. A prospective longitudinal study was made throughout a year period (November 2002 – November 2003) at the Athletic Department (Dirección General de Actividades Deportivas y Recreativas de la UNAM), with individuals that were diagnosed with Osgood-Schlatter disease and were treated with a conservative therapy of AINES (diclofenaco 50 mg VO, every 12 hours for 10 days) criotherapy, interferential currents and laser therapy. Mechanic therapy through strengthening of quadriceps and hamstrings, also relative resting periods away from their normal physical activity.
Results. A total of 13 patients, with an average of 12.8 ± 4.0 years, 11 males 84.6 percent and 2 females (15.4 percent). The diagnosis was made clinically in the total 13 (100 percent) of the patients and in 11 cases (84.6 per cent), radiographic images were utilized (AP and lateral of both knees). The findings were five (38 percent) in bilateral form, three (23 percent) in right knee and five (38 percent) in left knee. Findings also proved that five individuals (38.46 percent) shoed improvement after three weeks, four (30.76 percent) after four weeks and four (30.76 percent) after five weeks. After one year of follow through none of the patients reported to relapse into.
