ABSTRACT
The long term follow up of slipped capital femoral epiphysis treated by
in situ pinning had a good and excellent results in 90% of the hips.
Material and methods. We studied patients with slipped capital femoral epiphysis treated by
in situ pinning in the Shriners Hospital for Children, Mexico City with follow up of one year and more. We classified the slipped capital femoral epiphysis in acute, chronic, and acute – on – chronic, the radiographic classification was by the Southwick method, and we used the Iowa hip rating for the clinical evaluation.
Results. We studied 49 patients (58 hips), 26 were male and 23 female. The average age was 12 years, 8 months in male and 11 years, 7 months in female, the follow up average was 36 months. They were acute 1 case, chronic 34, and acute – on – chronic 14, by the Iowa hip rating we had excellent results in 44 hips (76%), good in 8 hips (14%), moderate 5 hips (9%), and poor 1 hip (1%).
Conclusions. By the Iowa hip rating system, the follow up in patients with slipped capital femoral epiphysis treated by
in situ pinning is excellent and good in the 90% of the cases.
