The accredited degree course in atherosclerosis research: a decade of work in the formation of human resources

ABSTRACT
Introduction: the Accredited Degree Course in Atherosclerosis Research comes up with the aim of contributing to the formation of a professional with a higher professional and investigative improvement, able to give a better attention to the population with regards to a health problem of great importance: atherosclerosis.Objective: to show the main results in the formation of human resources in the Accredited Degree Course in Atherosclerosis Research, during a 10-year work period.
Material and Methods: a descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted. The data were obtained from the database of the teaching secretariat of the Center of Investigations and References of Atherosclerosis of Havana (CIRAH), from January 2003 to January 2013. The variables studied were the specialties and the attention levels where the members of the certifying degree course work, the defended dissertations for Master´s Degrees, and the professional and investigative performances.
Results: during the period under study, 430 students graduated from the Diploma Course and 170 ones graduated from the Master's Degree. The students that predominated were the ones who worked in the secondary attention level. Finally, there was an increase in the acquisition and promotion of teaching investigative degrees and scientific degrees in the Master´s Degree Course.
Conclusions: the results of a decade of work of the Accredited Degree Course in Atherosclerosis Researchconstitute a positive contribution to the formation of human resources for health, with a high teaching and investigative preparation
