Peripartum Cardiomyopathy: Case Report

ABSTRACT

Peripartum cardiomyopathy (PPCM) is a rare disorder with high perinatal morbidity and mortality during pregnancy. Viral myocardiopathy has been proposed as the main cause of this disease. Diagnosis seems to be a challenge, since many of the changes caused by this condition resemble those occurring during pregnancy. Maternal mortality is one of the main indicators of a country's health system deficiencies. We present a case of a female patient with PPCM diagnosis during week 24.4 of pregnancy. This case illustrates the asymptomatic beginning of the disease, as well as the diagnostic difficulties. In the end, the mother died, but the fetus was able to survive.
