ABSTRACT
Introduction. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), breast cancer is the most common cause of cancer among women worldwide. It represents 16% of all cancer cases among them. An estimated 1.38 million new cases are diagnosed each year. Due to the high prevalence of this type of cancer in our population, it became extremely important to develop an early breast cancer detection program.Material y Methods. We made people aware of this problem through a motivation campaign through the mass media. The mobile health units from the Organismo Público Descentralizado O.P.D. Hospital Civil de Guadalajara and the Centro Universitario de Ciencias de la Salud (CUCS) part of the Universidad de Guadalajara (UdeG) took care of women from Jalisco who were interested in breast cancer detection programs. We elaborated complete medical records, physical examination and mammary sonograms, according to our findings. Women with high suspicion of malignancy were sent to our health care units. After mammograms were performed, women were evaluated at the Instituto Jalisciense de Cancerología.
Results. A total of 2248 patients aged between 15 and 88 years (average age 46 years) were evaluated. 419 patients (18.6%) required a sonogram based on physical examination findings. Mammograms were done to 373 (16.6%) patients due to the medical record and sonogram reports. 10 cases were positive for breast cancer and they received further attention at the specialized breast care unit at the Hospital Civil Fray Antonio Alcalde.
Discussion. Our detection model is unique in Mexico and it proved to be highly efficient in making people aware of breast cancer. Due to the positive response to this program, we recommend healthcare practitioners to promote breast cancer treatment and early detection strategies. Physicians must be able to recognize breast cancer programs, since this is an emerging pathology in Mexico.
