ABSTRACT
Aim: To determine the prevalence of peripheral neuropathy (NP) in diabetics type 1 and 2 taken care for in the Hospital de Especialidades CMN La Raza (HE CMNR) and its association with the age, time of evolution and degree of metabolic control.
Material and methods: 100 patients sent to the clinic of Diabetes of Endocrinology Department were studied. A neurological physical examination was assessed in search of NP, assigning a qualification according it the severity at the same time glycated hemoglobin was assessed (HbA1c).
Results: Total prevalence of NP was of 81%; in the diabetics type 2 it was of 95% and 69% type 1, being more severe en the diabetics type 2. Correlation existed positive between presence of NP and the time of evolution of the disease, as the NP and the age of the patient.
Conclusion: The prevalence of NP in this one group was elevated because it is a reference hospital, it was more frequent and severe in patients with DM type 2. The time of evolution from the diagnosis of the disease and the age of the patient is a factors that more correlate with the presence and severity of the NP.
