Characterization of feeding of Gerontos in a Health area

ABSTRACT
Introduction: The average of life at birth in Cuba is increased and also the effort that is made to achieve this reality, however there are few studies about the food of elderly adults. Objective: Identify behaviors and knowledge related with the food and healthy nutrition in gerontos of Havana city, of this work makes a characterization of the knowledge about food and healthy nutrition in this population. Material and method: The population of this study was a representation of gerontos selected at random (n= 150) survey by 3 students of the 3rd year of The health Care Technology school in Havana City from May to June 2010 (n= 150). It was applied 2 surveys that allow characterizing some knowledge and nutritional behaviors in these patients. The statistical processing of the data was made by the system EPI INFO version 6. Results: Great preference of fried foods, little consumption of fruits, consumption of strained beans and skin of birds, little consumption of raw vegetables and insufficient breakfast. Only the 48% related the feeding with the health, the 88% considered the vegetable fat the healthiest; the 29% identified the cholesterol as an animal fat, the 90% related the fruits with vitamins, the 70% considered the meats like sources of fibers and the 64% ignored their value for the health, only the 27% identified the fish like the healthiest meat and the 82.7% the pig meat like the most harmful. Conclusions: A deficient food culture, expressed by insufficient or missed knowledge, inadequate food conducts, and not very varied and unbalanced consumption in the gerontos studied.REFERENCES
