ABSTRACT
Hyponatremia is a frequent complication of brain injury and disease. It requires
assessment and management of all contributing factors. If acute and severe, initial
treatment with hypertonic saline may be necessary, irrespective of the exact
underlying cause. The traditional distinction of cerebral salt wasting (CSW) and the
Syndrome of Inappropriate Antidiuretic Hormone Secretion (SIADH) is not always
helpful for clinical management.
