Syncope and orthostatic hypotension

ABSTRACT

In this paper a conceptual update on pathophysiological aspects of syncope and orthostatic hypotension is presented. An approach to diagnostic and therapeutic confrontation based on an understanding of the syndrome etiopathological is proposed to allow stratification of patients according to the relative risk of suffering episodes of sudden cardiovascular death and/or episodes of mortality of any kind in future. Emphasis is done on the behavior of syncope and orthostatic hypotension in elderly patients, thus particularizing diagnostic and therapeutic algorithms in this group.
