ABSTRACT
CERES+ is a software for the assessment of food consumption.
CERES+ is the result of a joint project between the United Nations Food and Agriculture Agency (FAO) and the Institute of Nutrition and Food Hygiene of Cuba. The system performs calculations for dietary surveys at individual, household and individual-household levels using any kind of method such as 24-hour recalls, observed weighed records, estimated records, and combined methods; retrospective dietary assessments using semi-quantitative food frequency consumption at individual level; household food access and consumption surveys; and nutritional evaluation of food baskets. The system offers maximal flexibility allowing the use of all kind of reference values (such as Food Composition Tables and Recommended Daily Allowances) as its structure, components and dietary variables included as reference values being freely defined by the user. Data entry is performed using all the facilities offered by a WINDOWS environment, specially searching for food items and household measuring units. A considerable amount of calculations are made available by
CERES+ such as energy and nutrients, raw/cooked and wastage conversion factors, percentage of energy provided by different macronutrients, nutrient ratios, adequacy of nutrient consumption, per capita amount of food groups with common characteristics, percentage contribution of food items to energy and selected nutrients, and frequency distribution of categorical variables included in food frequency consumption. Both data required for calculations and results can be saved into files that can be used to perform descriptive statistical analysis within the software, and also exported to other statistical packages as .xls format files.
