ABSTRACT
An analytical familial aggregation study was carried out on 73 twins with mental disorders in the Pinar del Río municipality, Pinar del Río province on January-February 2009. The frequency of mental disorders in the other pair member and also in other family members with first or second degree kinships with the index case was calculated. The proportion of affected co-twins was different between monozygotic and dizygotic ones, monozygotic ones showing a greater probability to sicken. The influence of familial aggregation and preponderance of genetic factors over environmental ones in depression and bipolar disorders was evidenced, not so in schizophrenia. The most frequent non-genetic risk factors in monozygotic as well as in dizygotic twins were: smoking during pregnancy, suffering from some trauma and perinatal alterations. A precautionary strategy as part of genetic counseling to families with mental disorders was prepared based on the evidences obtained from the familial study.
