Need for an integral clinical handling of adult Cuban patients with Marfan’s syndrome

ABSTRACT

Marfan’s syndrome is a hereditary disease, the dissecting aortic aneurysm being its major lethality cause. The preventive adult treatment is a must, since precisely in this stage of life the major syndrome complications appear. The results of a transversal descriptive study of 51 adult patients, carried out in the period 2000-2010 are presented. The sample was characterized and the factors influencing on the progression of complications were defined. Most of the affected patients had never received an integral clinical following previous to the study, and were not aware of the implications of the disease. Due to this, a group of the patients usually carried out intense physical activities, which led to modify their life styles, besides readjusting or incorporating the specific treatment. All these facts evidenced the need of a multidisciplinary monitoring of the patients in order to prevent complications.
