ABSTRACT
IE (infective endocarditis) is a disease with an incidence of 3-9 cases per 100,000 population in industrialized countries. The most vulnerable population are the elderly and women. IE is defined as an infection that can affect different parts of the heart, such as heart valves, septal defects, and chordal endoncardio. IE is estimated to affect 77% of cases native valves, of which 43.3% are mitral valve and 26.3% aortic valve. The main causative organisms of IE are staphylococci, streptococci and enterococci. Diagnosis is mainly made on clinical, supported by laboratory and echocardiographic studies. The management strategy includes bactericidal antibiotic drug of choice and surgical procedures.REFERENCES
