ABSTRACT
In this article the most relevant results of the application of the Prenatal Ultrasonography Congenital Defects Detection Program in Matanzas province during 2008-2010 are presented and discussed. These results are displayed in figures according to the evaluated variables and are afterwards analyzed. Remarkable impacts on the quality of life of Matanzas population are attributed to the increasing consolidation of this program from its beginning. Through this method, data on the conception development in 39 592 women, covering 96,60 % of pregnancies in the first trimester and 98,37 % for the second one could be achieved, allowing to diagnose 299 fetal diseases and guaranteeing the existence of structurally healthy fetuses in the rest of the analyzed cases. The main defects diagnosed in the first trimester were those related to the neural tube closure and the anterior abdomen wall, while renal, cardiovascular and Central Nervous System malformations were typically found in the second trimester. Considering these findings, proper genetic counseling actions and an integral treatment for couples were applied by a multidisciplinary work team.REFERENCES
