ABSTRACT
Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and Substance Use
Disorder (SUD) are closely related; frequently the both of them appear
together in the same person. ADHD and SUD share anatomical
basis, in both disorders dorsolateral prefrontal cortex is affected and
subcortical activity is enhanced; as a result, inhibition is reduced and
reward evaluation is deficient. ADHD count as a risk factor for lifetime
SUD, in this context, ADHD treatment in the early stages of life is very
important. Pharmacological therapies for ADHD treatment have been
tested and favorable results have been found, when stimulants are used
for clinical purposes, can protect against SUD development. Cognitive
skills training must be considered too for ADHD treatment in order to
get better results.
