Background: Worldwide, between 75 and 300 million unintended pregnancies occur; of these, 95% occur in developing countries. Between 2.7 and 7.4 million in Latin America, of which approximately 60% are completed, a third are aborted; and from those aborted, 90% occur in developing countries in unfavorable conditions resulting 200 deaths per day from complications of pregnancy termination. Objective: Determine the incidence and factors associated with unintended pregnancy in pregnant patients attending the emergency department of the Hospital Regional Adolfo Lopez Mateos.
Patients and method: Prospective study in which patients with confirmed pregnancy in the period from 1st January 2012 to 1st January 2013 were identified, informed consent to participate; a previously validated assessment card was directly applied to the patients.
Results: 1180 surveys were conducted, finding an incidence of unplanned pregnancies of 69.3%. Associated factors such as age, marital status and education were analyzed. Validity statistically significant p .05 in the ratio of the first pregnancy planning current pregnancy was found.
Conclusions: percentages found for the various factors related mostly agree with those reported in the literature. It is important the need for preventive campaigns and no corrective nature, focusing on the most vulnerable population and at risk for unplanned pregnancy.
