ABSTRACT
Objectives: The aim of this study was determine the time spent on social networks (SN) among medical students and the
relationship with time spent on studying and doing homework.
Material and Methods: We made a descriptive, cross-sectional study in first-year medical students. A survey was used to
ask time spent on SN, studying and sleeping, in a school day. Survey also ask about gender, if they had studied in a public
or private school, average grades and with whom they lived. We used the chi-square test to compare categorical data and
the t test for continuous variables. We analyzed the correlation between numerical variables with the Pearson correlation
coefficient.
Results: All the students had at least one account in social network. The average use of the SN was
2.06 hours per day. The usage time of the SN was not found related to gender, school of origin, the grade point average
or with whom they lived. There was also no relation to the time they spent on studying and sleeping. Most students
(71.2%) had the perception that the time spent on social networks will affect the time taken to study and do homework.
Discussion: The time spent on social networks on first year medical students is similar to that reported by other authors
in college students. The relation between time spent on SN and the time invested to study had not been investigated
before, in our study there was no relationship between these two events.
