ABSTRACT
Introduction: There is growing research worldwide to examine Adverse Birth Outcomes (ABO) and its relationship with
syphilis. Evidence indicates that maternal syphilis (MS) and congenital syphilis (CS) have increased their burden in
Sonora, Mexico, but there is little information about its frequency and relationship with ABO as prematurity (P), low birth
weight (LBW) or fetal mortality (MF) and neonatal (MN). This study explores the prevalence of EPA in a pediatric hospital
from Sonora hospital.
Methods: We carried out a cross-sectional study for the year 2008, to estimate the prevalence of SC and 4 ABO in a
probabilistic sample of 300 mothers and their products, and further examine the potential relationship by bivariate logistic
analysis.
Results: Prevalence of SC was 7.2%, among children with treponemal infection 23% were LBW, 33.3% were born prematurely,
23.8% were stillborn and 14.3% died in the neonatal period. It was observed that 51.6% (154) of the study subjects were
not screened to identify SC. Newborns whose mothers had not had adequate prenatal care were 3.7 [95% CI (1.27, 10.82)]
times more risk of SC.
Conclusions: Congenital syphilis and ABO are a frequent cause of perinatal morbidity and mortality, and may be
underestimated due to a low rate of neonatal screening for
T. pallidum.
