ABSTRACT
Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune chronic disease, with a higher incidence in females of
reproductive age, particularly of African and Asian background. SLE is characterized by the presence of autoantibodies
and by the deposition of antigen-antibody complexes in some organs. Quantification of autoreactive antibodies, including
anti-nuclear antibody is one of the criteria for diagnosis.
In rare circumstances when lupus appears in children, it is aggressive and acute, with variations in the gender
preference, clinical and prognosis manifestations. Because of the low frequency, the clinical management of these patients
is complicated, and special and specific measures are required different from those of adults.
In this review the main clinical aspects of pediatric lupus are addressed, such as diagnosis, prognosis, treatment,
clinical manifestations, among others, while compared with the adult counterpart of this disease.
