ABSTRACT
Background: Recently, there has been a renewed interest in its use of the laparoscopy in the evaluation of patients with abdominal trauma.
Methods: Between July 1993 to March 2005, two hundred and twenty eight patients who presented with blunt or penetrating trauma and who were scheduled for celiotomy based on clinical evaluation, male 90.3%, female 9.7%; Mean age 29.± 3.6 years, constituted the study group. The patients underwent diagnostic laparoscopy prior to exploratory celiotomy.
Results: Complications occurred in 3.50%. Eight patients with anterior abdominal penetrating injuries had no evidence of penetration of the abdominal cavity at laparoscopy, and had no evidence of injury at celiotomy.
Conclusions: The diagnostic laparoscopy is a safe modality for trauma. With current technology, diagnostic laparoscopy is most efficacious for evaluation of equivocal penetrating wounds. There are areas within the abdominal cavity that cannot be accurately visualized with laparoscopy.
