ABSTRACT
A descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out in Manabí province, Republic of Ecuador during 2010, with the objective of characterizing some clinical-genetic and epidemiologic variables regarding Down’s syndrome. The universe under study was formed by 1 017 persons diagnosed with the syndrome. It was found that the prevalence rate equalled 8,5 per 10 000 inhabitants, the 0 to 19 years old group being the largest one and also that 51,8 % of cases had a moderate intellectual disability and in 40,32 % cases the mother was less than 35 years old at conception.. This study evidenced that in this region the Down’s syndrome largest prevalence rate is found in the optimum ages for conception and also that this genetic disease is accompanied by a moderate to severe intellectual disability and a greater degree of partial dependency in the patients.REFERENCES
