Brain abscess

ABSTRACT
Objective: To review the epidemiology, etiology, physiopathology, diagnosis and the treatment of brain abscess according to the current available evidence.
Evidence acquisition: References were identified by PubMed search of last five years publications with English term:
“Brain abscess”.
Results: Brain abscess constitutes a focal and dynamic form of intracranial suppuration that represents a medical emergency. With high incidence rates in developing countries, it is a global health problem that carries high morbidity, mortality and economic burdens for the health service. Mortality trends for this cause have diminishes notoriously from 50 % to 20 % and even more, thanks to the introduction of the computerized tomography, allowing earlier and more precise diagnosis and location. Overall, with the advent of antibiotics therapies,
Streptococcus spp have become the commonest
isolated organisms. Etiologic distinction can be made taking into account the abscess origin and the patient immune state. Currently the most important diagnostic tools are the imaging modalities despite clinic and raised serum markers high suspicious index. Its management requires a multidisciplinary approach. In this review are provided the epidemiology,
physiopathology, etiology, clinical context, diagnosis, treatment, mortality trends and prognosis of brain abscesses.
Conclusions: Brain abscess continued to be a serious entity with high mortality rates, from which is expected a more difficult treatment, due to the raising of inmunocompromised and elderly population.
