ABSTRACT
Melatonin in an indolamine, which has an endogenous synthesis by
pineal gland, which is regulated by the light-darkness cycle. It has been
attributed many therapeutic properties; however, it has been proved its
use in the management of insomnia, jet lag, and its antioxidant function.
Based on literature, it is known that serum and cerebrospinal fluid
concentrations vary depending on people age, whereby decreased levels
of melatonin could be related with nerodegenerative processes undergo
mainly older adults. It has been studied the usefulness of melatonin to
diminish the development of Alzheimer disease; however, there is a
lack of information that justify its use in this disease.
