ABSTRACT
Objective: To determine cognitive deterioration and to identify the association between the presence of cognitive deterioration and psychobiological, biologic and socialdemographic associations.
Methods: An observable explain study of retrospective cohort was carried out on a sample of
216 patients from different municipalities of Havana province that assisted during the period from September, 2011 to December, 2013 to the Salutogenic Consultation from “Joaquin Albarrán” Clinical-Surgical Hospital. An intelligence scale for adults was applied, Wisdom Adult
Intelligence Scale (WAIS). The sample was divided into two groups: with and without deterioration. On groups, a search for deterioration relation with medicines, social, biologic and socialdemographic factors was done. Data was processed through SPSS statistical system. Association measures used were Odds Ratio, Fisher´s Exact Probability and Anova Test.
Results: A definite deterioration was presented on 31 % of the patients while a 15, 3% resulted as a possible deterioration. On the biologic factors was relevant that 47 % of the patients with more than a crisis monthly since the beginning of the disease presented deterioration (Fisher p=0.0324) and 50% with partial crisis secondarily generalized presented deterioration (Anova p=0.0014). Between the psychosocial factors, the patients with epilepsy and psychosis presented more deterioration and among the patients related to medicines phenytoin was the pharmacy more related to deterioration.
Conclusion: The high frequency of epilepsy crisis and the use of phenytoin were found as factors to be controlled as possible causes of deterioration on the patient with epilepsy.
