ABSTRACT
This investigation was carried out with the purpose of determining the frequency of carrier pregnants of S and C hemoglobins in Guantánamo province, from January 2005 to December 2009. A total of 35 266 pregnants were studied from the data available in the registers of the Hematoglobinopathy of the Provincial Center of Medical Genetics, calculating the frequency of carriers. The frequency of HbAS carriers in the province turned out to be, with the most affected municipalities being Niceto Pérez (8,20 %), El Salvador (6,70%)and Guantánamo (6,39%). The HbAC carriers frequency in the province was equal to 0,90%, standing out Niceto Pérez (1,23%) , Yateras (1,15 %) and Manuel Tames (1,11%). These results are higher than those reported for the whole country and are a consequence of a greater number of African descendants in these zones and of the formation and union of couples.REFERENCES
