ABSTRACT
Hemoglobinopathies SS and SC are the most frequent
types of sickle cell disease found in Cuba. The Cuban
program for the prevention of hemoglobinopathies has
been applied in our country since 1983. In this article,
the results of this program applied in Villa Clara province from 1987 to 2007 are presented. In this period 215 273 pregnants were studied, and 3 850 of them were detected as carriers, approximately 2 percent of all pregnants studied. The study of their spouses was achieved in 89,2 % of the cases diagnosing 114 high-risk couples; 84, 2 % of them accepted prenatal diagnosis studies, the advanced gestational age being the most frequent cause for not performing this procedure. A total of 75 % of the couples who were diagnosed a sick fetus decided to interrupt pregnancy. The incidence of these hemoglobinopathies in Villa Clara during the studied period was 1, 07 per 10 000 born alive. Data from this study will contribute to optimize the program for the prevention of sickle-cell disorders in our country.
