ABSTRACT
Objective: To determine the morphometric characteristics of some macroscopic and microscopic modifications which occur in the cryptorchid testicles compared to normal testicles in Balb/c mice.
Method: An experimental study of a unilateral cryptorchism provoked in 36 Balb/c mice, male, adults, with medium weight 25 ± 1 g, maintaining water and food at libitum. Macroscopic (weight and volume) and microscopic alterations at the germinal epithelium level of the semiferous tubules wall and Leydig cells were studied.
Results: The weight and volume of normal testicles fluctuated around the medium value, whereas, in the cryptorchid ones, a more significant decreasement was found, starting from the second week, although there were no substantial statistic differences. The number of Sertoli and germinal cells disminished considerably in cryptorchid testicles with regard to those normal (p ‹ 0,01 for both),while Leydig cells showed no variations.
Conclusions: Qualitative modification of Sertoli and germinal cells were found in the cryptorchid testicles, what
demonstrates there is some grade of reaction of these structures to corporal temperature. The principal alterations observed occurred between the first and second weeks of the experiment. Changes were not found in Leydig cells, nor in weight and volume either in cryptorchid testicles compared to the normal ones, what may possibly be imputed to the observation period briefness.
