ABSTRACT
Introduction: In order to determine the behavior of upper gastrointestinal bleeding in emergency patients a retrospective study in patients older than 18 years who underwent emergency upper endoscopy for clinical manifestations of upper gastrointestinal bleeding in the period was conducted between January 1, 2011 and December 31, 2012 at the Center for Medical-Surgical Research.
Methods: The sample was composed of 99 patients who met the inclusion criteria. To collect data endoscopic report containing general information was used, and objects of study variables were analyzed.
Results: Predominance of male patients (69.7 %) and those over 60 years old; mane was the most common presentation for bleeding unrelated to portal hypertension, while it was for the hematemesis which was related to portal hypertension; peptic ulcer duodenal or gastric location (31.3 and 15.2 %) respectively and bleeding from ruptured esophagogastric variceal (15.2 %) were predominant etiologic diagnoses. IB Forrest classification represented (34.8 %) and endoscopic sign at the time of endoscopy for patients with ulcers.
Conclusions: Followed by the combined drug treatment was used in the majority of patients with or related to portal hypertension bleeding.
