ABSTRACT
Chronic venous disease (CVD) in the lower extremities is a common condition that can occur around
15% in men and 35% in women, affecting their quality of life as in other chronic diseases such as arthritis
or diabetes. Treatment of varicose disease alleviates symptoms and reduces the complication rate
of CVD. The traditional gold standard for the treatment of congestive via the great saphenous vein
(GSV) is the most common presentation of this disease is high ligation of the saphenofemoral junction
(SFJ) followed by stripping. This procedure is associated with neurological damage (7 to 40%), bedsores
and postoperative pain. His short-term effectiveness is very high but the rate of recurrence at 5 years
can be 30%, but only 10% of them are clinically relevant. To improve the effectiveness, quality of life for
patients, reduced postoperative pain and disability, complications and even cost, minimally invasive
technologies such as foam sclerotherapy, radiofrequency ablation and endovenous laser ablation are
now widely used in the treatment of varicose disease, leaving to evolve in this, have come to enrich this
field of vascular surgery. In this review try either thermal occlusion methods are performed endovascular
using a catheter or a fiber which is introduced along the vein to be treated and whose source of energy
is given by sound waves (radiofrequency) or by light (laser).
