ABSTRACT
Background: Haematology has been exercised since five decades ago in Specialties Hospital Manuel Avila Camacho, Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS), Puebla, Mexico, when one haematologist was hired. The specialty developed in our center during that period. Since 1985 two haematologists consultants were practicing and nowadays there are six. First bone marrow transplantation in our State was made in our hospital in 1992. In 2004 Haematology Service was founded as Clinical Department and split out of Internal Medicine Service. The Haematology Residency Postgraduate Course started in 2011; there are seven physicians in training on it at this time.Objective: To assess the performance of Haematology Service of Specialties Hospital Manuel Avila Camacho, IMSS, Puebla, Mexico.
Material and method: A retrospective analysis of the activity of the Haematology Service of Specialties Hospital Manuel Avila Camacho, IMSS, Puebla, Mexico, in 2013.
Results: In 2013 the Service had 1,677 patients admitted to hospitalization, 7,379 outpatient consultations, 236 new patients diagnosed with haematologic malignancies, 47 inpatients in average every day, mortality ratio of 4.89, and performed 35 haematopoietic transplants, the most made in our institution nationwide.
Conclusions: The Haematology service belonging our hospital is one of the most productive and efficient of our national institution, IMSS, considering its activity and human resources.
