ABSTRACT
Background: The Latin American Bone Marrow Transplantation Group
(LABMT) goal is to promote excellence in hematopoietic stem cell
transplantation (HSCT) in Latin America.
Objective: To know data about HSCT training programs in Latin America.
Material and method: An online survey was conducted in January and
February 2014. The survey was sent to 35 persons who had attended
the initial meetings of the LABMT.
Results: We received answer from 16 programs (4 pediatric centers,
1 adults center and 11 combined centers), from 6 different countries.
One-year fellowship programs were offered in 12 centers. The 16 training
programs develop their activities in centers where matched sibling
donor HSCT are performed, fifteen of them in centres where alternative
HSCT are also performed.
Conclusions: This data seem to be the first one concerning HSCT training
centres in Latin America. These programs represent an opportunity
to train Latin American physicians within Latin America, in their native
language, exposed to similar social, economic and cultural realities, at
lower costs and closer to their homeland.
