ABSTRACT
Classically it considered that pericardium exclusively had like mission to allow the activity cardiac without friction with the adjacent structures and that in addition, served to maintain heart in position fixed within thoracic cage by means of his ligament unions with the breastbone, dorsal column and diaphragm, which would avoid the torsion and displacement that would happen when the individual moves, jumps, etc. About the present time one thinks that pericardium has important functions, grouping itself in membranous functions and mechanical functions, both important ones.
